Marshfield Community Scarecrow Festival 2024 General rules & guidelines

All age groups are welcome to get involve and enjoy the Scarecrow Festival.

For residents displaying scarecrows in their gardens, entrants must complete the on-line Scarecrow Festival registration forms on the Marshfield Community Council website.

Deadline for online registration and display in garden: 18:00 Hours on Saturday, September 28th 2024

 

Be creative! All scarecrows must be original (built from scratch) by the entrant. No purchased or commercial creations allowed.

The judges will be consider each scarecrow for originality, creativity, craft, style  and novel use and application of materials, clothing and accessories.

There are several Scarecrow Categories for entrants to choose from:

  1. Families
  2. Children up to 10 years
  3. Young people 11 to 18 years
  4. Adults over 18 years
  5. Groups, Clubs, Schools 

Each category will have a Winner and (Highly) Commended result. The Judges reserve the right to award additional special recognition for exceptional entries and entrants.

Sizes:

  • Exterior scarecrow: Minimum height:  3 feet
  • Exterior scarecrow: Maximum height: 7 feet

All Scarecrows must be made and created and displayed in good taste. Offensive, inappropriate or scarecrows that go against the positive and friendly community spirit of the Festival will be disqualified.

Scarecrows may carry or display messages or signs or messages, but they must be in keeping with the comic character or style of the scarecrow e.g. ‘‘Crows – Stay Away!’’ No overtly political or offensive messages.

Scarecrows made by house residents must be displayed at the front of your property and should be positioned so that they can be clearly seen from the road or pavement. They must also be secured in a manner that they will not blow away and will not otherwise be a danger or possibly cause injury or damage.  Apartment residents should display scarecrows on balconies or near the entrance, if practicable. Scarecrows should not obstruct the pavement.

Scarecrows made by associations, teams, schools, clubs, social groups or churches may display scarecrows in various safe and prominent locations. E.g. play area or churchyard. Judges should be informed of these locations where practicable.

Marshfield Community Council will not be held responsible for any damage to Third Party property caused by the creation or insecurity of scarecrows. Owners are held solely responsible for the safety and security of their scarecrow(s) and for the process of making scarecrows.

At the end of the Festival scarecrows should be stored or disposed of responsibly and legally. No dumping or fly-tipping.
